Objective: The aim of study was to determine reasons for Australian general dentists' selection of restorative materials, in particular, composite and amalgam. Methods: A questionnaire on usage of restorative materials was mailed to 1000 Australian dentists whose names had been selected at random from an Australian Dental Association list of general dental practitioners. Results: 560 replies were received, a response rate of 56%. 98% of respondents considered that clinical indications were the principal influence on their choice of restorative materials whilst for 96% of respondents, patients' aesthetic demands also influenced their choice. The patients' wish for a certain material and their financial position influenced the choice of restorative material for 72% and 62% of respondents respectively. 32% of respondents used composite 'sometimes', 29% 'often', 12% 'always', 23% 'seldom' and 4% 'never' in extensive load-bearing cavities in molar teeth. For composite restoration of posterior teeth, 47% 'often' used the total etch technique and 36% 'never' used rubber dam. 68% of respondents agreed with the statement 'discontinuation of amalgam restricts a dentist's ability to adequately treat patients'. 75% considered that growth in the use of composites increased the total cost of oral health care. Conclusions: 27% of respondents from Australia seldom or never place large composite restorations in molar teeth, and their choice of material is influenced greatly by clinical indications and patients' aesthetic demands.
