When all ceramic systems are used with post core underneath, the question is raised as to the ability to mask the underlying color. The masking ability of the composite core build-up materials under all-ceramic crown hence merits investigation. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of composite core materials to mask underlying post when recommended thickness of all-ceramic crowns was used. Materials & Methods: Empress II disks (n=5) of 1.2 mm thickness (shade A2) and three pre-fabricated posts (Aestheti-Post [A], C-post [C], Parapost [P]) were selected for this study. Five composite disks of each material (Bis-core Natural®[BN], Bis-core Opaque®[BO], Corerestore2 White®[CW], Corerestore2 Universal® [CU], Core- Flo®[BCF] and Ti-Core Natural®[TC]) of three thicknesses (0.5, 0.75 and 1.0mm) were fabricated. The composite disks were placed between the post and the ceramic disks and color measurement was performed for all possible combinations using a Spectrophotometer(Minolta,Japan). The combinations of ceramic and composite disks without posts were served as control. CIE L a*b* were measured and DE values were calcualted. The data were statistically analyzed using One-way ANOVA with Tukey post hoc test at a significance level of 0.05. Results: The combination of 1.2 mm Empress II and 1.0mm of all composite disks was able to mask color of all three types of post (DE <2). While reduced to 0.75mm, only BN, BO, CW showed DE values less than two for all the post tested. Most of the 0.5 mm disks were unable to mask underlying color. Conclusion: The color of the restorations was least affected by the color of post studied when 1.0mm thickness of composite core was placed under 1.2mm of ceramic. BO showed the best masking ability with the lowest DE values whereas BCF exhibited the highest DE values.
