Y. LI, C. MUNOZ, S. LEE, and A. WILSON, Loma Linda University, CA, USA Objective: To compare the bleaching efficacy of Rembrandt Virtuoso Lightning Chairside Bleaching (VLCB) Gel with 30- or 60-minute Rembrandt Sapphire PAC Light treatment. Methods: Subjects (14) were randomly assigned to two groups (7/group). Demographic information and medical history were collected, and subjects received a dental cleaning. Clinical examinations included oral tissues,Bioform Color Ordered Shade (Dentsply International, York, PA) of maxillary incisors and tactile tooth sensitivity. Anterior teeth were bleached using Rembrandt VLCB Gel (Den-Mat, Santa Maria, CA) with exposure to Rembrandt Sapphire PAC Light (Den-Mat) for 60 or 30 minutes. The same clinical parameters were evaluated after the treatment and 7 days. The shade data were analyzed using the One-Way ANOVA (within-group) and Student t-test (between groups). Results: The baseline shade (60-minute: 16.11; 30-minute: 14.89) and the age were statistically comparable between the two groups. The post-treatment shade reductions were 10.07 and 8.75 for the 60- and 30-minute groups, respectively. Less shade loss occurred in the 60-minute group (0.46) compared to the 30-minute group (1.46) at the 7-day evaluation. The post-treatment and 7-day shade values were significantly lower (p<0.01) than the baseline, while the differences between the post-treatment and 7-day were comparable. There were no significant differences in the shade values between the two groups at the post-treatment and 7-day evaluations. Transit, mild to moderate tooth sensitivity was reported by 6 and 2 subjects in 60- and 30-minute groups, respectively. Two subjects in 60-minute group reported mild, transit gingival irritation. Conclusion: Rembrandt VLCB Gel with either 60 or 30 minutes exposure to Rembrandt Sapphire PAC Light is highly effective in whitening teeth with only transit tooth sensitivity and/or gingival irritation; the 60-minute exposure provides an average of 2.32 additional shade reduction at 7-day; and bleaching for 30-minute may be adequate for some patients.
