OTT, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster, Germany Objective: Carisolv 2 (MediTeam, Sävedalen, Sweden) is a substance for chemo-mechanical caries-removal and an improvement of the original Carisolv. The aim of this study was to examine reactions of pulp tissue to Carisolv 2 in vivo. Methods: In 64 caries-free molars (16 Wistar rats, age: 3 months) an occlusal cavity was prepared. The roofs of the pulp chambers were perforated with a sharp probe and Carisolv-2-solution was placed onto the exposed pulp of 32 molars for 20 min. 32 contralateral molars served as controls and were coated with an inert liquid containing isotonic saline solution and carmellose also for 20 min. The pulps of all teeth were capped with Ca(OH)2 and the cavities filled with a composite filling material. The animals were sacrificed after 1 d, 3 d, 7 d and 28 d. Results: After 1 d and 3 d a zone of pulp destruction was visible besides the signs of mechanical trauma due to pulp exposing procedure, i.e.: dispersed dentin particles with adherent odontoblasts and a zone of pulp tissue damage with a haemorrhagia that was restricted to the area of probe perforation. After 7 d numerous resorbing cells, i.e.: neutrophilic granulocytes could be identified within the marginal regions of necrosis zone. Signs of pulp tissue healing were apparent after 28 d. However, a restitutio ad integrum could not be observed, since an incomplete resorption of necrotic tissue material had resulted in persistence of the necrotic zone. In the control group we could observe no microscopical features that reveal any noticeable deviations from the above described Cariolv-2-group. Conclusion: Carisolv 2 did not cause additional pulp reactions to Ca(OH)2-pulp-capping and can probably be used in deep cavities without an enhanced risk for the vital pulp.
