-Objectives:Phosphate ester groups are known to link to some glucosidic residues in starch molecule. We have demonstrated to prepare phosphoryl-oligosaccharides (POs; calcium salt) from potato starch hydrolysate. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of human whole saliva collected by chewing a sugar-free gum containing POs on remineralization of enamel. -Methods:Human whole saliva was collected from 6 adult volunteers by chewing a xylitol gum only (control) or a xylitol gum containing 2.5% POs (test) for 20 min. Demineralized bovine enamel slabs were then immersed in the saliva for 20 min and rinsed with deionized water immediately. This treatment was repeated 4 times a day. After 4-d treatment, the enamel slabs were microradiographed to measure the lesion depth (Id, micrometer) and mineral loss value (dZ, vol% x micrometer). -Results:The samples in the test group indicated significantly lower Id (mean±SD=93±7) and dZ (3,323±289) values (p<0.01) compared with the control group with ld=117±11 and dZ=4,857±581. The enhanced remineralziation in the test group would be due to increased soluble Ca in saliva and gaining the salivary Ca/P ratio up to that of hydroxyapatite (1.67). -Conclusions:It was suggested that daily chewing of a sugar-free gum containing POs may one possible approach to stimulate remineralization process in enamel and thereby caries prevention.
