T.S. SHIPLEY, and E.P. HICKS, University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, Lexington, USA Orthodontic practitioners seek to determine a consistent method to diagnose open bite and deep bite tendencies, skeletal anteroposterior dysplasia, and need for extractions, while using fewer and simpler measurements. Practitioners can then create more accurate treatment plans, leading to more precise, controlled, and predictable outcomes. Objectives: To determine the relative diagnostic capabilities of the Kim Analysis and the University of Kentucky Cephalometric Analysis to predictably diagnose skeletal class II patterns in orthodontic patients. Methods: Over 50 skeletal class II patients, age 8.5 to 17.5, were identified and the following data collected for each patient using the UK Analysis: cephalometric readings, diagnosis of AP skeletal classification (I, II, or III), vertical diagnosis (deep bite, open bite, or normal), and need for extractions. The Kim Analysis was then applied to each patient. Results: A chi-squared distribution for the data verifies that both the UK analysis and the Kim analysis diagnose skeletal class II patterns at a highly comparable level (0.9989). For all patients, the results differed 32% of the time. For patients over 10 years of age, the results differed 23% of the time. For patients over 11 years of age, the results differed 20% of the time. For patients over 12 years of age, the results differed 11% of the time. For patients over 13 years of age, the results never differed. Conclusions: The pilot study suggests that the UK Analysis and the Kim Analysis are consistent in diagnosing skeletal class II patterns. Moreover, the data suggests that the accuracy of diagnosing skeletal class II patterns increases as the patient progresses from early to late adolescence. Further research is needed to verify the relative diagnostic capabilities of each analysis. (This study was supported by a University of Kentucky Student Research Fellowship).
