ALDIKACTI1, 1Ondokuz Mayıs University, Samsun, Turkey, 2Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey Objectives: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the effects of doxycycline to lathyrogen and ligature-induced periodontal lesions. Material and Methods:70 Wistar rats weighting 250-300gm were used. sixty rats were used as test and 10 rats were used as control group. Thirty rats constituted the lathyritic group. Experimentally lathyrism was created with daily subcutanous injection of beta-aminoproprionitrile, at dose of 5mg beta-aminoproprionitrile/100gm body weight, for 40 days. Ligature-induced periodontitis was obtained in 30 rats' mandibular molar teeth. Forty days later, blood was taken by cardiac puncture; lathyritic 10 rats(Group1),10 rats in ligature-induced periodontitis group(Group2),and control rats were decapitated. After forty days; in lathyritic 10 rats(Group3)and 10 rats in ligature-induced periodontitis group(Group4)doxycycline at dose of 21mg/day was administrated orally; no medication was performed in lathyritic 10 rats(Group5)and 10 rats in ligature-induced periodontitis group(Group6). On the 55th day, these 40 rats were decapitated. Mandibles of all rats were dissected out, histopathologic and ultrastructural evaluations were performed on periodontium of molar teeth. The concentration of interleukin-6 in blood serum assessed using the ELISA method. Results: In doxycycline administrated groups (Group3 and Group4), when compared with the no medicated groups (Group5 and Group6), no regeneration of periodontium was observed both in histopathologic and ultrastructural evaluation. Biochemically, statistically significant increase in serum interleukin-6 concentation in doxycycline administrated group like Group1, Group2; comparing with the Group5, Group6, and control group was determined (p<0,001). Conclusion: In contrast to previous studies, oral administration of doxycycline did not induce the regeneration capacity of periodontium both in lathyritic and ligature-induced periodontal lesions. | ||
