A.J. ZIEBERT, M. WALISZEWSKI, and S. VARGHESE, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, USA Objectives: To determine the effect of two different gold coating agents on the metal-ceramic bond strength of four high-noble gold-palladium ceramic alloys by means of a three-point bend test. Methods: Thirty-six rectangular specimens (24mm long, 5mm wide, and 0.5mm thick) were fabricated of four high-noble gold-palladium alloys (Deva-4 and Orion, Degussa-Ney Inc., Bloomfield, CT; Olympia and Collegiate, Jelenko, Armonk, NY). Following manufacturer's instructions, twelve specimens were coated with Aurofilm (Metalor Dental USA Corp., North Attleborough, MA), twelve specimens were coated with Deck Gold NF (Degussa-Ney, Inc., Bloomfield, CT), and twelve specimens were uncoated. VITA-Omega opaque and porcelain (Vident, Baldwin Park, CA) was fired onto all specimens to a uniform thickness of 0.8mm. The specimens were tested on an Instron Testing Machine (Model TTC, Instron Corp., Canton, MA) using a three-point loading fixture and a compression load cell CC, at a crosshead speed of 0.51mm/min. Fracture loads obtained from the specimens were recorded and Bond Strength Ratio (BSR) values were calculated. Results: Collegiate coated with Aurofilm recorded the highest mean BSRx10-3 at 2.52, while Orion coated with Deck-Gold recorded the lowest mean BSRx10-3 at 1.15. Statistical analysis with t-Test revealed no significant difference at p>0.05 in mean BSRx10-3 values between coated and uncoated specimens of Collegiate, between coated and uncoated specimens of Olympia, and between coated and uncoated specimens of Orion. There was a significant difference at p>0.05 in mean BSRx10-3 values between Deva-4 coated with Aurofilm (1.54) and uncoated Deva-4 (1.22). There was no significant difference between Deva-4 coated with Deck Gold NF (1.46) and Deva-4 coated with Aurofilm. Conclusions: There was no significant difference at p>0.05 in mean BSRx10-3 values between coated and uncoated alloys of Collegiate, Olympia, and Orion. There was a significant difference in mean BSRx10-3 between Deva-4 coated with Aurofilm and uncoated Deva-4. | ||
