Objectives:Comparison of periodontal tissue regeneration between Atrisorb and Resolut XT barriers Methods:This study compared clinical results of 40 periodontal osseous defects treated by two types of resorbable barrier materials. Thirty patients (23 males and 7 females) suffered from moderate to advanced periodontitis were assigned to receive either Atrisorb„¥ barrier (group A) or Resolut XT„¥ barrier (group B) therapy at random. Thorough periodontal phase I treatment and oral hygiene instruction were performed before periodontal surgery. Papillary preservation, partial thickness flap, citric acid root conditioning and decortication procedures were routinely applied during operation. Postoperative care included chlorhexidine mouthrinse daily and antibiotic medication for 2 weeks. Clinical assessments including probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession (GR), plaque index (PlI), gingival index (GI) and radiographic examinations (RE) were taken at baseline and 0,3,6 months after regenerative surgery. Results:Six months following therapy, both A and B treatment groups achieved comparable clinical improvement of pocket reduction (3.5mm vs 4.1mm), attachment tissue gain (3.0mm vs 3.0 mm), gingival index and plaque index. Within group comparison showed a significant attachment gain and better pocket reduction between baseline data and either 3 or 6 months postoperatively (p<0.01). There were no statistically significant differences of measured data between group A and group B. Radiographic examination also demonstrated a general bone fill in those treated osseous defects of both treatment modalities. Conclusions:The results of this study indicated that a comparable and favorable regeneration of periodontal defects were achieved in both Atrisorb„¥ and Resolut XT„¥ barriers. Further long-term study and histologic observation were needed to evaluate further clinical benefit of Atrisorb. (Supported by NSC-89-2314-B002-557)
