M.A. BAUMANN, R. LOY, and O. BEHRENS, University of Cologne, Germany Objectives: Modern root canal treatment (RCT) frequently uses NiTi-rotary systems with the outcome of a greater tapered root canal. Therefore there is a need for changing and adapting the guttapercha (GP) filling technique. The aim of this study was to compare various single cone techniques with cold or heated GP and sealer (Top Seal, Dentsply Maillefer - CH) with the gold standard lateral condensation. Methods: In 66 extracted incisors RCT was carried out with Orifice Shapers, ProFile .04 and finally #40 .06 (Dentsply Maillefer - CH). 2 ml 5% NaOCl after every size and 5 ml as final flush were used for irrigation. Patency was tested with a #10 H-file. Randomly the teeth were divided into 6 groups (all except group D) with sealer): A) lateral condensation, B) Endomagic single cone .06 and sealer inserted with EZ-Fill® (Loser&Co. - D), C) Endomagic single cone .06 (OHC – B) and sealer inserted with lentulo #40, D) Endomagic single cone .06 (OHC – B) without sealer, E) Thermafil® (Dentsply Maillefer - CH), F) Soft Core® (Loser&Co. – D). Methylene blue (0.2%) was used for passive dye penetration. After clearing the teeth maximum dye penetration was measured under a stereomicroscope (x40) from two angles. Statistical analysis was done by means of ANOVA. Results: Between all six groups tested, significant differences in the seal could be shown (p < .001) with group B and E being as good as LC. Groups C, D and F exhibited a higher dye penetration than A, B and E (p<.001). Conclusions: Hence we conclude that some single cone techniques with thermoplastic GP and sealer or cold GP and a new sealer application tool (EZ-Fill) can be an alternative to LC. | ||
